Chapter 19
âYou okay, Princess?â Rhys said.
I cleared my throat. âYeah, Iâm fine.â
âYou suddenly got this faraway look in your eyes.â
âHmm,â I said, âsorry, I was distracted. We should probably run the dance a couple more times, since we didnât finish.â
Rhys nodded. âWhatever you say.â
Just as we were about to start again, the front door opened. A middle-aged couple walked in, carrying bags in their arms, followed by a boy who had to be Rhysâs younger brother. They were like mirror images of each otherâthough his brother was shorter and looked all of twelve years old.
âSo, Rhys gets the house to himself,â the boy said, âand Iâm forced to go to the mall with you two instead of staying home and playing Xbox? How is this fair?â
Rhys shook his head. âIâm older than you.â
âYeah, and more hormonal.â
âZachary David Castle!â the woman said. âYou apologize to your brother and his guest right now.â
âWhy? Itâs true.â
The woman didnât back down, and he rolled his eyes.
âSorry,â Zach said, then looked at me. âI guess youâre the girl who has to dance with him?â
âI am,â I said.
The kid shook his head. âAgain, Iâm sorry. Heâs been practicing for hours on end, but he still sucks.â
âHey,â Rhys argued, âyou said I got better.â
âNo, I said your level of suckage got better,â Zach corrected, giving a shrug. âBut could you really have gotten any worse?â
My dance partnerâs eyes lit on his brother, pinning him to the spot and promising retribution.
âIâm going to get you for that,â Rhys said.
âYeah, okay.â
Before I could blink, Rhys had vaulted over the couch and pulled his brother into a headlock. The kid was wily, though. He slipped out of the hold, but Rhys quickly caught him again. It was obvious theyâd done this a thousand times before.
âYouâll have to disregard this little display of brotherly love,â Rhysâs dad said, coming over to me. âIâm Glenn Castle, Rhys and Zachâs dad. And you are?â
âAriel,â I said. âPleasure to meet you, Mr. Castle.â
A groan sounded out, and I saw that Zach and Rhys were now wrestling on the floor.
âDoes this happen often?â I asked.
âOnly every day and twice on weekends.â Mrs. Castle walked over to me, holding out a dainty hand. âIâm Jennifer, the momâthough I maintain they get this unruliness from their father.â
A loud crash came from behind. But she ignored it, and so did I.
âItâs nice to meet you,â I said.
âIn all seriousness, I hope this isnât bothering you, Ariel.â
âOh no.â
Mr. Castle leaned over and whisper-shouted, âShe has to say that. Unlike our two hooligans, the girl obviously has manners.â
I laughed at that. âItâs fine, seriously,â I said. âMy mom and I hate it when the house is too quiet. Plus, as an only child, I always wanted a brother or sister. So this is nice.â
Mr. Castle smiled then took his and his wifeâs bags into another room. The boysâ fight seemed to be winding down. Mrs. Castle, though, I noticed was looking at me.
âRhys was right about you,â she said.
âWhat do you mean?â I asked.
